Seeing this Vogue editorial featuring the ever beautiful and talented Adele, photographed by Mert&Marcus, a question rised inside my mind: Would Vogue feature Adele if she wasn't well, Adele?
Magazines seem to idolize women with size zero bodies or very very thin ones, so called "perfect bodies", and forget that curvier women can be as beautiful and cause as much admiration as a "model" can.
And isn't profound admiration what models should evoke?
I can't help but wonder would curvy women ever be featured if they weren't as famous as Adele?
What is your opinion regarding this matter?
This is a pretty great editorial. The photographer did a nice job.

I love this photoshoot, the photographer did a fantastic job! I think you're totally right about this one, they wouldn't probably feature a curvy woman if she wasn't as famous as Adele or if she wasn't a plus size model.

wow i had to look twice if this is really adele she looks really really gorgous here, a beauty from inside and outside. love that pictures!

Marianne luckily for us some italian magazines are starting to feature at least curvy bloggers. I hope this is a start!

What a beautifull woman and what an amazing talent! Unfortunatelly magazines and designers rarely choose to work with curvy women. I think this editorial proves everyone wrong!

i love adele to bits and pieces and love this feature on V...thanks to the people speaking out so much about the issue many mags have started featuring curvy models and bloggers on their pages as well now...even if these models are curvy they carry the weight differently and i don't see why they are not hailed as supermodels but restricted to being "plus sized" or "curvy models"..i think there will be a change in the future from what it was before..:)

I love Adele but personally I don't think that Vogue would be featuring her if she wasn't Adele. Lately I've been seeing a little bit of improvement in the industry but those are just baby steps.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I prefer curvier girls. I don't know why but I just do.
Also thank you for supporting my blog. I really appreciate it.
Θεά η Adele!! Μας αποδεικνύει ότι και η γυναίκες με καμπύλες είμαστε όμορφες :) Αλλά και το πρόσωπό της είναι θεϊκό!

I think Adele looks gorgeous in these photos, I especially love the third and fourth photo. And I love her singing too! But I don't think Vogue would put Adele in their magazine if she wasn't so famous :(

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful editorial with Adele. The aesthetic is glamourous and romantic, and we really see a new kind of Adele captured in these photographs. I'm rarely impressed with American Vogue editorials (they just seem so mainstream) but this one was a job well done.

These photos are incredible!!! Adele is so beautiful,i love that 60s glamour she seems to ooze!! :) I don't think magazines are trying to say that the girls that model the clothes have the "perfect" body i just think thats the type of girl of they want wearing the clothes. The fashion world is all about fantasy, taking us away from real life and i think if they used more curvy woman, which is probably the most common and "real" figure-then the fashion world wouldn't have that same, intriguing and fantasising appeal. This is just an opinion and i'm not suggesting its right and i may even come to change my mind as i grow older but this is what i think about it right now.
ReplyDeleteAlways such great and intriguing posts :) Take care,Daniella xox
I actually think it's wrong to feature only TOO skinny women because young girls watch them and want to look the same and this is dangerous. I personally think very skinny models look kind of creepy :D so, what I want to say is that size doesn't matter when the person loves herself/himself just the way she or he is and doesn't try to be someone else, some stranger.. clothes' size is not the most important thing in life.

I'm SO glad that someone's actually recognizing that curvy women are still just as beautiful as they were in past times. These photos of Adele are so stunning and I'm glad that she is proudly representing those of us who are NOT size zeros:) This is a wonderful post♥

Heyyy Marianne! Sorry it's been so long since I have commented, I'm totally lame at keeping up to date with this whole blogging malarkey. This post is great, and you make a very valid point. It kind of sucks that all the major fashion magazines only celebrate someone with curves if they have achieved the kind of mega-stardom that Adele has. It makes the inclusion of curvy girls into a novelty, when in fact it should be the norm. I'm willing to bet the majority of women who read Vogue, Elle et al would be far happier if they saw a more accurate version of the average woman gracing the pages every month.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry I didn't get your other comment about clicking the link, I totally would have done it about a million times if I had read it earlier :( hope it went well!

She's really beautiful in this editorial. And I like the fact that they put a curvier girl on a magazine like Vogue, but I think it was only an exception just because she's so famous, and everyone is talking about her lately! Plus, I believe that they photoshopped the pics enough to make her look thinner.
ReplyDeleteAnd btw can't believe she's 23 years old! I thought she was around 30! :/
Hooray to sexy, curvy women that is not size 0! :)

Recently I've been having trouble with the term 'curvy' since I never know exactly what it means. I understand that it's often a euphemism for larger women, but there seems to be some confusion as to whether that means overweight and obese women or simply women above the typical sample size. I guess I'm also a little confused since a lot of models are objectively curvy (say, Lara Stone, who has C cups and a very narrow waist in comparison to fairly full hips). I have been referred to as curvy as well though I'm fairly slender. I guess the gist of my confusion is what does curvy mean and which curves count as having curves? Is it having a substantial bust or fuller hips? Is it a specific size or above?
ReplyDeleteOf course, it's clear that Adele is not a couture runway model no matter what the standard, and I don't think that she or Scarlet Johansson or Kate Winslet would ever be featured if they weren't famous. But I do think that fashion often fetishizes proportions more than raw measurements. Crystal Renn, for example, might objectively have a larger waist than Miranda Kerr, but she possesses the types of proportions that fashion fetishizes. In particular: long legs, height, and pear/hourglass shape. If anything, I think fashion wounds those who do not possess those proportions more deeply than those who do possess the proportions--but just happen to be a size 6 or 8. I do wish that fashion showed different proportions: apple shapes, short legs, thick thighs, athletic builds, etc. more than I wish fashion showed different weights or sizes. I definitely think that you can be much larger than a size 0 and still look like a model, but you can also be a size 0 and think you look 'ugly' because you happen to be 5'1 or an apple shape. That, to me, is much more problematic!
Oh gosh, Adele is such a beauty! I love her and her music. She's extremely beautiful and extremely talented. I do get what you're saying though. I have a feeling if Adele wasn't Adele then Vogue wouldn't put her as the cover. Which is pretty sad. I really hope these magazines would change their perspectives when it comes to what the perfect body type is. I would love to see more healthy, beautiful girls in their pages. :)

ReplyDeleteI love seeing different bodies featured in magazines, I think slender bodies are beautiful I also think athletic bodies are beautiful and I also think curvacious bodies are beautiful. I have no one specific 'taste' when it comes to things like this, I think women of all sizes are gorgeous and bodies (as long as healthy and not being destroyed by over eating / under eating) should be celebrated!
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous edditorial but I have to agree, a woman of Adeles (Very normal) size would more than likely not be featured if she was just a 'regular' lady!
Thanks so much for your lovely words on my blog <3 following you now!

I am definitely for curves. I think that is how God had made women to look like. Unfortunately i am lacking in some curves, i think i look like olive from popeye the sailorman. These images really challenge how the fashion world see a woman. It changes the notion that only thin is beautiful.

ReplyDeleteWomean i every size are beautifull.

She's beautiful, just stunning!! But, I have to agree..if she wasn't a marvelous singer, would she be in there!?! Possibly not..you don't see plus-size models (which is a stupid term, but using it for the point) in regular magazines really, which is a shame. You only see the skinny ones and I think we should see a variety of sizes really. Merit should not be placed on your size at all really, but it is and until women themselves say they've had enough, I fear it will keep going. I like to see women of all sizes, it gives a better outlook for the younger ones :)
ReplyDeleteShe looks soooo beautiful! Good point though - I really feel that they should start featuring normal sized models, and that is should be such a big deal (even a PR statement) if a magazine features a 'plus size' model..

I don't think curvier women would be featured if they weren't well, Adele. I think it's sad though as curvier women are just as beautiful and when different shapes/sizes are featured in Vogue it gives out a good message to people because there isn't one body type that everyone thinks is beautiful. I think she's stunning but she does look a bit slimmer here than what she seems to be when I've seen her on tv, but that could just be because of the angle of which she is sitting at and lighting or her clothes. I think she looks beautiful whenever I have seen photos of her though :) xx

good question, and well put... Although I feel like they put the camera on angles in which she would look thinner. If you pay attention to each photo, and you didn't know who Adele was, you would imagine that girl being thin because all the clothing she is wearing and the angles the camera is in make her seem a lot thinner.
ReplyDeleteShe looks beautiful! great post! I'm you new follower!

This is such a beautiful photoshoot ... and shows the beauty that is Adele so gorgeously. I agree, curvy women are not often the subject of glamour photoshoots in fashion magazines. I love the fact that Adele states very matter of factly that she is happy with the way she looks and exudes self-confidence in stating it. Thanks so much, lovely, for your sweet comment on the Pink Valentine Part II post ~ so glad you're a part of it! xo

I'm sorry I haven't been able to comment much as of late- yoga training has been keeping me busier than I anticipated. I adore these photos- you always have the best pictures! Adele is gorgeous and I personally love seeing curvier women featured in editorials and wish mags would present them more often. As far as admiration goes; I admire talent, integrity and character far more than being skinny. So while it's fun to look at the models wearing the clothes- it's the truly talented women like Adele, who end up garnering and keeping my attention and respect. Thanks for this post, a very important subject! Xo, Abby
